Abstract

859,296. Measuring magnetic fields. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 23, 1959 [March 25, 1958], No. 9965/59. Class 37 Apparatus for measuring a magnetic field in a medium having a temperature in excess of 92‹C. comprises a semiconductor device which has an electrical characteristic varying with the strength of the field, the device being located in a brass vessel through which a cooling fluid is passed. The Figure shows an apparatus comprising a brass tube 1 within which a Hall generator 2 of for example indium arsenate is mounted so that it may be rotated from outside the tube about its three main axes. The semiconductor device 2 is kept cool by passing for example compressed air or an inert gas or a cooling liquid through the tube 3. A thermocouple 4 is provided to measure the ambient temperature in the immediate vicinity of the Hall generator to prevent its being subjected to a thermal overload. The Hall voltage is amplified and recorded by conventional means or its change of magnetic resistance may be measured. The Hall generator may have its thermal capacity increased by embedding it between two thin aluminium oxide wafers. The brass tube 1 may be disposed in a thick-walled ceramic or graphite vessel the cavity between the two vessels being cooled by a fluid. The provision for rotating the Hall generator enables zero components of the magnetic field to be checked or alternatively three semi-conductive devices may be fixed and mounted along the three main axes.
