Abstract

859,126. Optical apparatus. RANK PRECISION INDUSTRIES (B.A.F.) Ltd. July 17, 1957, No. 22648/57. Classes 97(1) and 98(1) A variable aperture masking plate particularly for motion picture projectors or cameras comprises a base plate having a fixed aperture and two shutter members slidably supported on said base plate, each shutter member including a limb extending to the boundary of the base plate whereat it is connected to mechanism for urging the limbs in opposite directions to vary the effective aperture. As shown, a base plate 1 has an aperture 2 behind which are slidably mounted the two L-shaped shutters 3 and 4. The long sides of each shutter are mounted in a groove 5 milled in the back of the plate. A screw thread 6 having a knurled knob 13 is mounted within a housing 7 and carries a left hand threaded nut 9 attached to the long limb of the shutter member 4 and a right hand threaded nut 8 attached to the shutter member 3 and a spiral spring 10 located between the nuts to urge them apart. Thus rotation of the knob 13 in either direction serves to vary the length of one side of the aperture 2, the shutters being urged against the plate 1 by springs 11 and 12. In a further embodiment, the relative motion between the shutters is effected by the rotation of a pivoted arcuate plate which is attached to F-shaped shutter members on either side of the pivot. The mask is intended to adapt motion picture cameras or projectors to image formats of differing size.
