Abstract
858,820. Automatic frequency control systems; transistor switching circuits. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 25, 1958 [Aug. 12, 1957], No. 23994/58. Classes 40(5) and 40(6). In an aircraft A.C. supply system the lowest permissible frequency is controlled by a frequency discriminator comprising high- and low-pass filters 6, 7 and 9, 8 whose outputs are rectified and differentially combined to produce a positive or negative output applied to a D.C. amplifier and delay circuit 2, 3, which, for only one polarity of output from the discriminator and after a finite delay actuates a control device for correcting excessive frequency drop of the A.C. generator frequency. The D.C. amplifier 2 may comprise NPN transistors with Zener diodes 25, 26, 27 as D.C. coupling elements, and rectifiers 22, 23 at its input, so that only positive inputs are transmitted through the first transistor and, if so, the Zener diodes 25, 26 are respectively non- conductive and conductive, and the final transistor 29 conductive to short circuit the output capacitor 30 and make Zener diode 27 non- conductive and therefore the control device inoperative. But a negative input disables transistor 20, causing Zener diodes 25 and transistor 24 to become conductive, and blocking Zener diode 26 and transistor 29 so that capacitor 30 charges exponentially to the value rendering Zener diode 27 conductive after a time and energizing the control device.
