A document 1, Fig. 1, e.g. a cheque, has a strip of magnetic material 2 for recording data showing the origin of the cheque. The strip may be duplicated symmetrically at each end so that either end can be presented to the senser. The strips may be curved because the sensing heads 19, Fig. 3, are carried on rotating arms 20 or the area may be extended as shown at 4 to facilitate application. During sensing movement of the rotating sensing head is synchronized with the cheque feeding mechanism. Recording is effected by inserting the cheques while still in the book into a simple machine in which they pass between the poles of gapped ring magnets. A high-frequency bias field may be provided to assist magnetization during the recording. Sorting.-In the form of Fig. 4 the cheques are taken in turn by a sucker 29 on an arm 31 and carried over a line of sensing heads 37, the sensed data causing one of three solenoidoperated hammers 38, 39, 40 to displace a corresponding one of three pins 34, 35, 36 slidable transversely through the arm. The projecting pin strikes a corresponding abutment 41, 42, 43 and stops the arm with the cheque presented to one of three suction grippers which are associated with separate bins.
