Abstract

Conjugated polyenes are polymerized by contact with a catalyst system formed by contacting a reducing component with preformed metastable titanium trichloride. The polyenes, of which many are specified, may be aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, e.g. butadiene-1, 3, isoprene, chloroprene, piperylene, 4-methyl-hexadiene-1, 3 and 2, 3-diphenyl-butadiene and may be polymerized alone or inter se or in admixture with monoolifinic or non-conjugated polyolefinic compounds of which many are specified. The reducing components are those which can be used for carrying out the process of Belgian Specification 543,292, e.g. the alkyl and aryl compounds of lithium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, aluminium, tin and lead. The polymerization is preferably effected with the reaction components dispersed in an inert liquid, e.g. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, hydrogenated aromatic and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons and in the absence of oxygen, carbon dioxide or water. The examples describe the preparation of polymers from butadiene-1, 3, isoprene and mixtures of chloroprene with ethylene, butylene or isoprene in the presence of catalysts made from titanium trichloride and triethylaluminium, lead tetraethyl, tin tetraethyl, phenyl sodium, phenyl lithium, n-butyl lithium, n-butyl sodium, diethyl cadmium, phenyl calcium iodide, barium phenyl iodide, diethyl aluminium chloride, tri-isobutyl aluminium and di-iosbutyl aluminium hydride.ALSO:Finely divided metastable titanium trichloride which can be irreversibly converted to the stable form by the action of heat, e.g. at temperatures above 200 DEG C., is produced by passing titanium tetrachloride vapour and hydrogen free from oxygen through a silent electric discharge, preferably at a temperature between 0 DEG C. and 100 DEG C. Any form of silent electric discharge may be used. Catalysts for the polymerization of conjugated polyenes are produced by mixing, preferably in an inert liquid vehicle, e.g. aliphatic, aromatic, cycloaliphatic, hydrogenated aromatic and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, metastable titanium trichloride and a reducing component as defined in Belgian Specification 543,292. Specified reducing components are the alkyl and aryl compounds of lithium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, aluminium, tin and lead; specific examples being lead tetraethyl, tin tetraethyl, phenyl sodium, phenyl lithium, n-butyl lithium, n-butyl sodium, diethyl cadmium, phenyl calcium iodide, phenyl barium iodide, triethyl aluminium, triisobutyl aluminium, tri-n-octyl aluminium, dimethyl aluminium methoxide, di-isobutyl aluminium hydride and diethyl aluminium halides. In the example a catalyst is made by mixing triethyl aluminium and metastable titanium trichloride in the presence of toluene.
