Abstract

Copolymers of 2-chlorobutadiene-1,3 and acrylonitrile may be prepared by polymerizaton in aqueous emulsion at a pH of 7 to 11 in the presence of a dialkyl xanthogen disulphide and with stepwise addition of the chloroprene. The preferred disulphide is diisopropyl xanthogen disulphide. Catalyst, e.g. peroxides and persulphates such as potassium persulphate, and emulsifiers, e.g. alkali metal salts of rosin soaps, optionally together with the sodium salt of dinaphthyl methane sulphonic acid, may be employed and the polymerization short-stopped at 50 to 80% conversion by the addition of a stopping agent, e.g. phenthiazine. Stabilizers, e.g distyryl diphenylamine, may be added and polymer separated by freezing. The latices may be slightly acidified so that the water-insoluble rosin acids are precipitated with the polymers. The polymers may be compound with vulcanizing ingredients, e.g. zinc oxide, magnesia, carbon black, stearic acid, paraffin wax, ethylene thiourea, N-phenyl-a -naphthyl-amine, and vulcanised Specification 512,458 is referred to.
