Abstract

858,410. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 22, 1958 [Dec. 27, 1957], No. 41355/58. Class 100(4) A printing apparatus has a plurality of type faces on a flexible endless band continuously moving past a plurality of print hammers which are individually actuated when the type required at that point on the record sheet is opposite the particular hammer positioned at the same point. As shown in Fig. 1 an endless chain belt 10 having spaced type members 13 passes over rollers 11, 12 which are continuously driven, and in front of an inked ribbon 31 and a record strip 17 behind which are print hammers 27. The record strip 17 is advanced intermittently by sprocket wheels 20, 21 coupled together by a belt 22 and the hammers 27 are operated individually by' electromagnets 30. In a simple digital printer the data is stored in a magnetic drum 34, Fig. 2, which rotates once as the belt 10 is advanced one type space, the hammers being more closely spaced to allow for the time required for the drum 34 to advance one scanning position. As shown eleven hammers occupy the space of ten type members. A timing track 35a is read by an inductor means 36a which passes signals to a print location distributer 37 and a chain character distributer 41. The former is an eleven stage binary counter which passes a pulse in turn to each of one of amplifiers 381 to 3811 corresponding to print hammer operating magnets 301 to 30<SP>11</SP> while the latter is a ten stage counter, each stage representing the character which is opposite a hammer, passing signals to a conventional comparator 40. When the comparator receives an equal signal from one of the storage reading inductor means 36b to 36e and the chain character distributer 41 it provides an output to all the amplifiers 381 to 3811 and that amplifier at that moment also receiving the output of the print location distributer 37 will actuate the corresponding magnet 30 to operate the appropriate hammer 271 to 2711 to print the desired character in the desired position. A modified storage and operating arrangement capable of printing any of 48 characters is also described.
