Abstract
858,274. Road vehicle suspensions. HUMBER Ltd., and WILLS, R. D. Jan. 11, 1957 [Oct. 20, 1955], No. 29978/55. Class 108(2). A rig for use in checking the geometrical relationship between parts of a motor vehicle front suspension comprises a support structure 6, 7 simulating the parts of the vehicle framework to which the suspension is attached and adapted to support the suspension (e.g. without wheels attached) in the normal attitude for a horizontal vehicle, and means for measuring the inclination of the wheel axes when in different predetermined steering positions thereby to determine the angle of camber and/or king pin inclination and/or castor. In the example shown the cross-bar 3 of a suspension comprising wish-bones 1, 2, and helical springs 4 is offered up to pre-set attachment points on bars 7 supported by a tubular frame. The springs 4 are compressed a predetermined amount by means of distance pieces 8, and nuts 10 on threaded rods 9. A dummy track rod 12 of the correct length is attached to the steering arms 13, 14. Correct positioning of these arms is checked by means of movable gauges 18, 19. The castor and camber angles and king pin inclination are measured by means of suitable gauges 24, attached to the wheel or wheel axle 25, readings being taken in the central and 20 degrees inclination positions as indicated by a pointer 21 and a scale 20 on the track rod 12.
