Abstract
Polyurethanes are prepared from polyisocyanate compositions comprising a polyisocyanate and a liquid flame-proofing agent (see Group IV (b)). Specified flame-proofing agents are tri-beta-chloro-or-bromo-ethyl phosphate, 2:3-dibromo-propanol, tri-n-butyl phosphate, hexachlorobenzene and bromoform. Specified polyisocyanates are tolylene 2:4-diisocyanate and dicyclohexyl-, dimethydiphenyl- and diphenylmethane diisocyanates. The compositions have enhanced liquid stability. In Examples : (1) a polyester resin obtained from pentaerythritol (2 mols), butylene glycol (7 mols), adipic acid (6 mols) and phthalic anhydride (1 mol) is reacted in the presence of water and an alkyphenolethylene oxide condensate with a composition containing diphenylmethane diisocyanate and tribetachloroethyl phosphate to give a flameproofed foam; (2) as in (1) but using a castor-oil citrate in place of the polyester and N:Ndimethyl-benzylamine as catalyst.ALSO:The invention comprises polyisocyanate compositions comprising a polyisocyanate and a liquid flame-proofing agent. Specified flameproofing agents are tri-beta-chloro-or-bromoethyl phosphate, 2 : 3-dibromopropanol, tri-n-butyl phosphate, hexachlorobenzene and bromoform. Specified polyisocyanates are tolylene 2 : 4-diiosocyanate, dicyclohexyl, dimethyl-diphenyl-and diphenyl-methane diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof with, for example, tri- or other polyisocyanates. The compositions are used in the preparation of polyurethanes (see Group IV(a)). In an example tri-betachloroethyl phosphate in various amounts is added to diphenylmethane diosocyanate and the effect thereof in stabilising the diisocyanate in liquid form is measured.ALSO:Foamed polyurethanes are prepared from polyisocyanate compositions comprising a polyisocyanate and a liquid flame-proofing agent (see Group IV(b)). Specified flame-proofing agents are tri-beta chloro- or fromo-ethyl phosphate, tri-n-butyl phosphate, 2 : 3-di-bromo-propanol, hexachlorobenzene and bromo-form. The polyisocyanate compositions have enhanced liquid stability. In Examples: (1) a polyester resin obtained from pentaerythritol (2 mols), butylene glycol (7 mols), adipic acid (6 mols) and phthalic anhydride (1 mol) is reacted in the presence of water and an alkyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensate with a composition containing diphenylmethane dusocyanate and tri-betachloroethyl phosphate to give a flame-proofed foam; (2) as in (1) but using a castor-oil citrate in place of the polyester and N:N-dimethylbenzylamine as catalyst.
