Abstract

<PICT:0857168/IV(a)/1> In melt-spinning apparatus of the type wherein molten thermo-plastic polymer is pumped through a pack containing a filter bed located above a spinneret, the filter bed comprises, in combination, an inert porous casing containing a filling of fine inert granular material around an inert core which allows the passage of molten polymer to the spinneret, the external area of the inlet surface of the filter bed exceeding the area of the transverse section of the inert porous casing. The casing may comprise a stainless steel wire gauze cylinder which may be crimped in a continuous series of vertical corrugations extending the full height of the cylinder, and the corrugated casing may fit just inside the body of the pack. The fine granular material may comprise metal particles, alumina or sieved sand. The core may comprise coarse granular material such as coarse sand contained within a stainless steel gauze, or a plug of sintered metal particles such as metal balls each of about 1/32 inch diameter. Alternatively the core may be non-porous and may be provided with peripheral vertical grooves, the grooved surface being covered by a close fitting layer of fine inert porous material such as fine mesh stainless steel gauze. As shown a pack body 1 contains a spinneret 2 supported by an aluminium gasket 3 on a lip 4. A melt distributor plate 5 rests on the spinneret 2 and supports a sintered metal porous cylindrical core 6. An aluminium gasket 7 makes a melt-tight seal between the core 6, the plates 5 and the sidewall of the pack 1. A cylinder of corrugated stainless steel 100 mesh gauze 8 rests on the gasket 7 and the space between the gauze 8 and the core 6 is filled with fine sieved sand 9, this sand also covering the top of the core to a depth of a quarter of an inch. The molten polymer enters the pack body and flows through the sand in the direction of the arrows.
