Abstract

A penicillin preparation is manufactured by contacting an anion-exchange material with a solution of a penicillin salt, causing adsorption of the penicillin anion, and then washing with a solution of an electrolyte such as sodium chloride to remove penicillin anion (and taste thereof) from the surface of the anion-exchange material. The anion-exchange material may be apatite, kaolinite, or, preferably, a polyamine resin such as the hydrolyzed reaction product of a t-amine (e.g. trimethyl amine) and a haloalkylated copolymer of styrene and divinyl benzene. In examples the potassium salts of penicillin G and V are used. Examples V and VI illustrate the compounding of the products as pharmaceutical compositions. Specification 654,706 is referred to.ALSO:A pharmaceutical compositions comprises a penicillin preparation manufactured by contacting an anion-exchange material with a solution of a penicillin salt, causing adsorption of the penicillin anion, and then washing with a solution of an electrolyte such as sodium chloride to remove penicillin anion (and taste thereof) from the surface of the anion-exchange material. Penicillin G and V are the drugs used and the anion-exchange materials specified are the apatites, kaolinites and the reaction products of t-amines with halogenated copolymers of styrene and divinyl benzene. The resin-penicillin compounds may be put up into conventional solid and liquid forms which may be sucked, chewed or swallowed and which contain conventional excipients. Fatty bases are specifically mentioned. Specification 654,706 is referred to.
