Abstract
Fluorine-containing monomers containing one or more ethylenically unsaturated linkages alone, or in admixture with themselves or another monomer are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising a liquid chlorine-containing organic compound, an organic compound of a metal of Group IIIb and a halide of a transition heavy metal, i.e. a metal of Group IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa or VIII of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table. The catalyst is described in detail in Specification 817,308. The polymerization is effected in bulk or in the presence of an inert diluent. The Specification contains an extensive list of fluorine-containing monomers, e.g. vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, 1, 1-difluoro-2-chloroethylene, 1, 1-chlorofluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene, completely and partially fluorinated propenes, butenes, and dienes, phenyltrifluoroethylene, alpha-difluoromethyl styrene, alpha-trifluoromethyl styrene, 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrafluoroethyl vinyl ether, 1, 1-dihydro-fluoroalkyl vinyl ethers, and trifluoroacrylonitrile. The other monomer may be butadiene, ethylene, or vinyl chloride. The inert diluent may be n-hexane, pentane, isopentane, cyclohexane, kerosene, tetrahydronaphthalene, benzene, toluene, or xylene. The polymers may be used as protective coatings, pressed in articles such as sheets, gaskets, diaphrams, or dissolved in organic solvents such as diisobutyl ketone and applied to metal surfaces by spray and brush techniques.
