Abstract

The invention relates to bacterial culture products having antiviral properties and obtained from the culture solutions of bacteria of the genus proteus freed from bacteria material, said products being of so high a molecular weight that they are not dialysable in aqueous solution through "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) and being soluble in ethanol to such an extent that they are not precipitated from their aqueous solutions by adding ethanol up to a content of 75%, said products being characterized by a phosphorus content of below 1,7% and a sugar value of below 20% by leaving the leucocyte emigration in the leucocyte emigration test (LE-test-described) unchanged at concentrations of 10-9 and less and by being inactive in the antilipemia test (AL-test-described) at doses smaller than 50g /kg, and their acylation products. Specified are the acetyl, propyl and benzoyl derivatives. Typical species of Proteus are Proteus mirabilis and Proteus vulgaris. The cultivation is aerobic preferably submerged using nutrient media known to be suitable for the growth of these microorganisms, a fully synthetic medium (e.g. glucose, ammonium sulphate, primary potassium phosphate, potassium chloride magnesium sulphate and sodium lactate in water of pH 7,4-7,5) being preferred. The bacteria cell material is separated from the culture solution, e.g. by centrifugation and the culture solution adjusted to apH6,5 is dialysed against water. Inactive material is precipitated by adding 3 volumes of ethanol to the clarified aqueous solution remaining after dialysis, and the ethanol soluble material after removal of ethanol is dialysed. The non-dialysable solid residue can be further purified by further dialysis against water, precipitation with ethanol and extraction with chloroform or petroleum ether.ALSO:Anti-allergic, anti-viral substances having a synergistic action with sulphonamides and obtained as a 75% aqueous alcohol-soluble, non-dialysable (aqueous solution) isolate of the clarified broth in which have been cultured bacteria of the genus Protens, (see Group IV(b)), or the acyl derivatives thereof especially the acetyl derivative, are mixed with a carrier to provide pharmaceutical preparations for topical, enteral or parenteral administration. Specified carriers are water, polyalkylene glycols, gelatine, lactose, dextranes, starches, magnesium stearate, talc, vegetable oils, benzyl alcohols, gums, petroleum jelly and chlolesterol. Optional additions are stabilizing agents, wetting or emulsifying agents, substances for regulating the asmotic pressure e.g. sodium chloride and glucose, buffers e.g. sodium mono- and dihydrogen phosphate and other drugs. The preparations may be in the form of salves, creams, tablets, dragees, capsules, pearls, solutions suspensions or emulsions.
