Abstract
856,256. Unwinding. WEAN EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. May 13, 1957 [June 25, 1956], No. 15098/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XVI] Coil-handling mechanism includes three coil saddles arranged in side-by-side relation so that a narrow coil may be supported by the middle saddle and a wide coil may be supported by the two outer saddles, mechanism for raising the middle saddle alone to raise a narrow coil supported thereby, and mechanism for raising the two outer saddles to raise a wide coil supported thereby. A coil of strip steel to be unwound is positioned on saddles 47, 49 if a wide coil or on a saddle 48 if a narrow coil. The appropriate saddle or saddles is then raised by worm gears 53 driven from a motor 54, through a shaft 57a, Fig. 3, for the saddle 48 or through a shaft 58a for the saddles 47, 49, the appropriate shaft being clutched by handoperated lever means 59, 61. The coil is thus positioned with its axis coaxial with hollow shafts 5 slidable in frame members 3 and having circular members 6 rotatably mounted thereon. The shafts 5 are moved axially by worms 16 driven by motor 19 and threaded on screws 20 carried by the shafts. A coil supporting member 12 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 9 coaxial with each shaft 5 and has a rim 13 bearing against the annular wall of a socket 7 in the circular member 6. Each shaft 9 is axially movable by worm and screw means 25, 26 driven by a motor 24 on a bracket on the shaft 5. With the coil positioned between the members 6, these members are moved inwardly to engage the sides of the coil while the members 12 enter the central openings of the coil or, if the members 6 are already in position the members 12 only are moved. With the coil thus supported the saddle(s) is lowered and the leading end of the coil is threaded through feed and straightening rolls 43 to draw the strip from the coil, thus rotating the members 6, 12. The members 6 are supported at their peripheries by rollers 35. The members 6 may be braked by means 29 during uncoiling. Index members 42 carried by the shafts 5 co-operate with fixed scales 40 to facilitate positioning of the members 6. A coil is presented to the machine by a carrier 80, Figs. 5, 6, supported at one end on wheels 82, running on rails 83. At its other end, long supporting members 85 of the carrier rest on guideways 74, Fig. 3, of a roller 72, one of the members 85 having a rack 86 secured thereto engaging a gear 79 on the roller 72 to move the carrier forward and back. Retainers 91 to engage the side of a coil on the carrier 80 are adjustable to or from one another on a shaft 89, for coils of different widths, when the retainers are pivoted up in their inoperative position.
