Abstract
856,026. Oxygen-producing canisters. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Feb. 16, 1959, No. 5306/59. Class 81(2) An oxygen producing canister for respiratory apparatus comprises a housing with an inlet for exhaled air and an oxygen outlet, two chambers containing oxygen-generating material in the housing, each chamber having ari inlet and an outlet and means for connecting one chamber at a time to the exclusion of the other between the housing inlet and outlet. In an airtight housing 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 is a hollow cylinder 6 divided into two chambers by a transverse solid wall 12 and having perforated end walls 7, 8 spaced from the housing by corrugated mesh 13, 14. Oxygen generating and carbon dioxide chemical' 26, 27 e.g. potassium superoxide in the chambers is spaced from each side of the transverse wall.by perforated walls 9, 10 and corrugated mesh 11. Fibre glass cloth or mats 28, 29 are located between 'the chemical and the perforated walls. Two annular partitions 15, 16 space the cylinder from the housing, the space between the partitions communicating with outlet ports 17 of the lower chamber 4, and inlet ports 18 of the upper chamber 5. Each partition has circumferentially spaced openings 20, which are axially aligned in pairs and permit communication between the spaces 31, 32 'between each chamber and the housing. A valve 22 is soldered by a low melting point alloy to each opening 20 in the lower partition and is spring urged towards the corresponding opening in the upper partition. Initially air passes from the inlet 2 through the lower chamber 4 to its outlet ports 17 and then through space 31 surrounding the upper chamber 5, thus by-passing the upper chamber. As the chemical in the lower chamber becomes exhausted heat generated by the chemical reaction melts the solder and each valve 22 is released from an opening 20 to close the corresponding opening 21 in the upper partition. Air from the housing inlet 2 then flows to the outlet 3 by way of the space 32 around the lower chamber, the openings in the lower partition inlet ports 18, and through the upper chamber 5.
