Abstract

855,872. Heel building machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., CHOICE, F. C., and QUARMBY, R. C. Jan. 9, 1958 [Jan. 10, 1957], No. 945/57. Class 17(1) A heel building machine has heel lift-positioning devices 2, a nail block 1 adjacent the devices on which a stack of lifts may be supported and positioned by the devices and from which nails may be driven into the stack, means to receive nails from a nail assorting machine and convey them to a nail delivering position between the devices to deliver the nails to the nail block, and means for moving the devices to an out-of-the-way position to allow the conveying means to move over the nail block. A presser pad is movable over and away from the devices for pressing the lifts together, and the devices are moved to the out-ofthe-way position in response to movement of the pad away from the devices, and to operative position in response to movement of the conveying means away from the nail block. Nails pass from tubes 39 through block 25, which is adjustable vertically by handwheel 37, to nail transfer block 17 carried on transfer slide 5 which is driven via teeth 8 by gear 9. Blocks 25 and 17, which are changeable, have holes arranged in the same pattern as the holes in block 1. The nails are retained in block 17 by a plate 23 secured to a slide 41 which is normally latched to slide 5. Towards the end of the movement of slide 5 the latch is released by engagement with adjustable screw 55, and slide 41 with plate 23 is withdrawn rearwardly by spring 43, permitting the nails to fall from block 17 to block 1. As slide 5 moves rearwardly, movement of slide 41 is restricted by engagement with stop 63, and slide 41 is relatched. During the rearward movement of slide 5 cam 125 thereon acts via roll 123 and arms 121, 115 to depress rod 103 which disengages latch 81 from lug 77 so that arm 75 may be swung counterclockwise by spring 79. This movement of arm 75 acts via roll 87 on one of two arms 71 carrying beam 69 to swing arms 91, 93, whereby arm 101 is swung rearwardly and partially closes the lift positioning devices 2. With the machine at rest, beam 69 and slide 5 in rearward positions, and the devices 2 closed, the operator pulls beam 69 forwards, and by treadle or hand lever moves presser pad 131 down on to the stack. During the forward movement of beam 69, arms 75 and 91 move with the beam, arm 91 moving about pivot 95,moves arm 101 to press the devices 2 against the stack, latch 81 re-engages lug 77, and before the beam completes its movement, screw 135 moves arm 75 and hence arms 91 and 101 to press the devices 2 firmly against the stack before pad 2 presses the stack. The machine is then started. After operation, beam 69 is raised and moved rearwardly by springs, arm. 101 moving forwardly to move the devices 2 to out-of-the-way position, and rod 137 connected to arm 91 operating a one revolution clutch to operate slide 5: a block 143 on slide 5 wedges against a leaf spring 141 on the machine frame to prevent jarring when movement of bar 71. is arrested. Specifications 420,293, 661,319, 716,804, 745,442 and 798,936 are referred to.
