Abstract
Bicyclo (2,2,1)-heptanols are prepared by contacting 1 mole of a bicyclo-(2,2,1)-heptene with 1 to 10 moles of 75-100% sulphuric acid in the presence of a non-reactive solvent at 0-30 DEG C. for 0,5 to 5,0 hours and recovering the solid bicyclo-(2,2,1) heptanol product. The reactant preferably contains no more than one alkyl side chain and may be prepared by Diels-Alder condensation of a cyclopentadiene compound and a mono olefin. In an example dicyclopentadiene is condensed with ethylene and the resulting norcornylene hydrated in iso-octane at below 10 DEG C. and the norborneol (exo isomer) recovered by distillation.
