Abstract

An oriented polyvinyl alcohol fibre is made which contains non-fibrous particles of polymerized basic vinyl compound which consists to the extent of at least 20% by weight of <FORM:0855552/IV(a)/1> units (wherein Py is a pyridyl, alkyl-substituted pyridyl or quinolyl radical) and the remainder being units derived from a vinyl ester, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, styrene or divinyl benzene, the fibre consisting to the extent of 65-99,5% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol (containing at least 95% by weight of vinyl alcohol units) and having a nitrogen content of 0,05-5% by weight. In the above fibres 5-50% of the hydroxyl groups may be acetalized with a C1-C20-monoaldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde or benzaldehyde. The fibres may be made by a process which comprises preparing an aqueous suspension of polyvinyl alcohol mixed with an aqueous emulsion-polymerized basic vinyl compound of the above-described type and extruding the suspension into a medium capable of extracting the water, e.g. heated air or nitrogen or a concentrated aqueous solution of p sodium or ammonium sulphate, stretching the resulting filaments to a draw ratio between 2:1 and 12:1, heat-treating the oriented filaments until they shrink not more than 10% when immersed in water at 60 DEG C. for 30 minutes and, if desired, reacting the resulting filaments with a C1-C20 monoaldehyde until 5-50% of the hydroxyl groups have reacted. The resulting fibres are dyeable with acid and direct dyestuffs. The preparation is described of emulsions of polymers of basic vinyl compounds employing specified peroxy, redox and azo polymerization catalysts and anionic, cationic and non-ionic emulsifiers.
