Abstract
Distilling apparatus comprises a boiler portion for vaporizing a liquid and a condensing portion for condensing the vapour, in which heating of the liquid in the boiler portion and cooling of the vapour in the condenser portion are both produced by the use of a Peltier heat pump which effects transfer of heat from the condenser portion to the boiler portion. In a preferred embodiment which may be <PICT:0855458/III/1> used for the purification of sea water, the water is admitted through inlet chamber 17 up to the base of a thermal and electrical barrier 36 within a Peltier heat pump assembly 27 which comprises a boiler assembly 40 and a condensing chamber 41. The assembly is attached to a base member 26 by means of a thermoinsulating member 28, and comprises an annular bank of alternately disposed ringshaped dissimilar elements 29 and 30, the inner and outer end surfaces of which are alternately joined by thermally and electrically conductive inner and outer annular thermojunction members 31 and 32. Elements 29 and 30 are separated by a plurality of annular electrical insulation members 33. The annular outer thermojunction members 32 are provided with a plurality of outwardly extending condensing fins 34 which provide drip edges for the condensate. A direct current electric source is connected through a conductor 38 to the uppermost thermojunction member 32 and a return conductor 39 is connected to the lowermost thermojunction member 3211. As a result of the current, heat is produced on the boiler side and withdrawn on the condenser side thus causing distillation without loss of heat to the exterior of the apparatus. The thermoelements may be made of the materials described in Specifications 766,999, 806,640 and 814,594. Preferred negative thermoelements comprise 61.95-65% of lead, the remainder being chiefly tellurium with a small quantity of selenium or sulphur. Preferred positive thermoelements comprise 58.0 to 61.8% by weight of lead and 42.0 to 38.2% of tellurium.
