Abstract

855,274. Photo-electric tape readers. CREED & CO. Ltd. June 25, 1959, No. 21797/59. Class 40(3). [Also in Group XIX] Tape reading apparatus for reading information stored on a tape 4 in the form of a code combination of perforations 6, comprises means 1, 2 for directing a beam of parallel light on the tape, a plurality of photo-cells 7, 8, each for determining the presence or absence of a perforation in the tape in one code element position and each positioned on the side of the tape remote from the source of parallel light at a distance X equal to a distance of from 3- to 15- times the diameter of a photocell window, and a plurality of light baffles 9, the axis of which are disposed parallel to said beam of light and each having an interior surface which is optically non- reflecting. The photo-cells may comprise semiconductor devices. The baffles may be formed of synthetic resin bonded paper with the interior surfaces sprayed with optical matt black. The invention has the effect of increasing the ratio of the signals produced by perforation 6 and tape area 5 with no perforation since only a small amount of light 12 which diffuses through an area with no perforation reaches the photocell. If desired the apparatus may include an apertured light chopper 10.
