Abstract

854,762. X-ray apparatus. DEAN & CO. (X-RAY APPARATUS) Ltd., A. E. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 30988/56. Class 98(1) Apparatus for indicating the field to be irradiated by an X-ray beam includes a housing which is placed between an X-ray tube and an aperture defining the field and which carries an official device which forms an image of the field as viewed from the tube focus. and through the aperture. As shown, a housing 1, lined with lead, is fixed at one side to an X-ray tube 2 and at the other to a housing 4 for a lead leaf diaphragm 5, 6. A tube 8 projecting from housing 1 contains an object lens 9 and a viewing lens 10, to which light passing in through the diaphragm is reflected by a mirror 11, which is either transparent to X-rays or movable out of the beam before exposure. The tube 8 and mirror 11 may be fixed or, as in the example shown, tiltable. The mirror frame is fixed to a pair of sleeves 14a rotatable on fixed spigots, and the tube 8 is carried by a member 16, having an arcuate portion sliding over a similarly-shaped part of the housing. Member 16 is mounted on a pair of arms 15a, pivoted on the sleeves 14a, and having upturned ends carrying pins 19 engaging slots 20, formed in bellcranks 21 pivoted at 22. The other arms of the bell-cranks are connected by links 23 to levers 24 clamped to the sleeves 14a. The positions of the pivots of the bell-cranks are so chosen that the angular movement of the mirror 11 is half that of the tube 8. Spring-pressed friction discs hold the parts in any adjusted position. A lead-glass filter may be mounted in tube 8. The image is laterally reversed, but may be reversed again by a further lens. Cross lines may be provided on the lens 10, and a transparent plate 25 at the bottom of housing 4 has a central spot 26 which the operator aligns with the cross lines to eliminate parallax error. Alternatively lens 10 is replaced by a ground glass screen, having cross-lines, and on which the image is formed and viewed directly. Where a cone or hood is used instead of a diaphragm the mirror 11 may be mounted in the cone or hood with the tube 8 projecting from the side.
