In a heterigeneous reactor the resonance escape probability is increased by arranging the fuel rods in two or more interpenetrating lattices, the rods in each lattice being at an angle to and preferably perpendicular to those in other lattices. Each lattice may have its own cooling circuit and the circuits may be connected.
