Abstract
854,318. Collecting oyster spat. MAHEO, H. July 1, 1958 [July 1, 1957]. No. 21055/58. Class 48. A device for collecting oyster spat comprises a string 1 wound in spaced turns round a framework 2, The string is dipped in lime-wash. The frame shown is of truncated pyramid shape and the string is wound into notches 8 in the sloping members 4 of the frame. A plurality of wound 'frames are nested together to form a composite collector which is secured to the bed of the sea by a square bar passed through square openings 7 at the apices of the pyramids and driven into the sea bed. Rectangular or square frames may be used, the string being wound parallel to both pairs of parallel sides. A plurality of rectangular or square frames are detachably mounted one above the other in spaced relation to form a composite collector. The spat is removed from the string by the apparatus shown in Fig. 4 which comprises a rotating plate 11 having a recess into which fits the base 3 of the pyramid frame 2, a die 15 mounted on a telescopic rod 19 and a reel 14 rotated by a handle 17. The die may be a circular hole in a plate or a vertical slot in a plate. By transferring the handle 17 from the reel to a square bar 13 extending through the pyramid frame the string can be wound from the reel on to the frame. A device for rotating the rectangular or square frames consists of stand having two U-sectioned holders adapted to embrace opposite sides of the frame and secured to axially aligned rotatable horizontal shafts, one of which is provided with a handle.
