Abstract

Class 37 The flatness of a body, which may be a strip is determined by locating it on a table 10 in which are recessed sensing coils 12 covered with a plate 14 of air permeability. The inductance of the coils is varied according to the nearness of the strip and each coil forms, with a further balancing coil 25, two arms of a circuit which is balanced in the absence of a strip and gives a maximum output when the strip is completely flat. A number of such coils may be provided transversely of the strip and each may have its own recording channel. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 an oscillograph shows six traces corresponding to the six sensing coils. If the material under examination has a permeability which does not differ substantially from that of air a wheel carried in a pivoted arm may ride on the strip so as to vary the inductance of the coil.
