Abstract

Starch is recovered from starch-bearing roots and stems by feeding the wet starch-bearing material into a high speed rotating rotor disc (the peripheral speed of said rotating disc being at least about 21,000 feet per minute) which imparts its velocity to the material and impinges it upon a surface, the impact of which is substantially normal to the direction of the material whereby the starch granules are released from the cells without shredding them nor the vascular fibres, subjecting the resultant starch-fibre-fruit water mixture to screening and washing operations to wash and separate the liberated starch from the fibre and further treating the resultant starch slurry for removal of residual fibre and solubles therefrom, as by starch tables or centrifugal means. The apparatus used in the first step is an impact mill of the type described in Specification 811,686. The washing and screening may be effected with a series of sieves and shakers but preferably a series of centrifugal screen pumps (see Group I) are used. The washing may be done directly or in countercurrent manner. The resultant starch slurry may be passed over conventional tables or through centrifuges for final purification but it is preferred to pass the slurry with counter current washing through a series of hydrocyclones.ALSO:The main subject-matter of this Specification pertinent to Class 46 is apparatus identical with that described in Specification 845,940; several such apparatuses may be arranged in series. The claims are concerned with a starch recovery process.
