Abstract

853,534. Electric selective signalling systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 21, 1958 [Nov. 21, 1957], No. 37562/58. Class 40 (1). In a selective signalling system in which a number of field stations S1 S2 ... S5, Fig. 1, are connected to a central station over a single communication channel each field station when it receives any data from some external source temporarily stores the data in a memory M1, M2 ... M5, until the communication channel is not in use by any other field station, and then transmits its data to the central station. In order to prevent several field stations transmitting data simultaneously the following arrangement is employed. Immediately a field station has data it wants to transmit it " listens " to the communication channel. If the channel is disengaged (i.e. if no signals are present on it) then the field station transmits a "seize " signal which comprises an A.C. signal of a frequency f1 and a duration SE1, SE2 ... SE5, Fig. 2, corresponding to the particular field station. The field station then " listens " to the channel again for a short period I, Fig. 2, and if the channel is still disengaged it transmits a " lock " signal SV also of frequency f1 and of a duration which is longer than any " seize " signal, after which it immediately transmits its data Sc. If, when a field station " listens " in an interval I after having transmitted its " seize " signal and finds the channel engaged (by another field station's " seize " or " lock " signal), then it reverts to its normal condition and continues " listening." When the channel next becomes disengaged it will make a further attempt and retransmit its " seize " signal. An outline construction of a field station (Fig. 3, not shown), is given which includes a rectifying arrangement as a " listener," transistor flip-flops and diode gates as a control circuit which ensure that the field. station only tries to transmit when it has data in its memory, and a counter, counting 25c/s pulses for controlling the production of the " seize " and " lock " signals.
