Abstract

In a method of operating an internal combustion engine which is operating on a fuel having a total sulphur content of at least 0.1% wt., the cylinder lubrication is effected by a mobile lubricating composition which comprises a lubricating oil having dissolved therein up to 40% by weight of the composition of a polymeric aluminium compound OnAlmXp, where X is a group RCOO-, R being an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, m, n, and p are integers, m is not less than 2, and the ratios m/n and m/p are within the ranges 0.75 to 2 and 0.5 to 3 respectively. The Groups X in the molecule may be the same or different. Such compositions are described and claimed in Specification 853,334. Where the amount of additive would normally convert the oil to a grease, mobility may be preserved by the addition of an anti-gelling agent, e.g. 8-hydroxyquinoline. Preferred oils are SAE 30, 40 and 50 mineral oils. The Groups X are preferably derived from benzoic or salicylic acids or C12-C20 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, e.g. stearin or olein. The preferred additives have the formula (I) O3Al3X3, where the groups X may be the same or different. The additives may be prepared either by heating aluminium alcoholates with water and carboxylic acids, preferably in an inert non-volatile diluent such as lubricating oil, or by heating the aluminium alcoholates with carboxylic acids alone to form acyloxy aluminium alcoholate compounds and further heating the latter. In examples, additive compositions consisting of (i) 40% wt. light lubricating oil and 60% wt. of a material of formula I wherein 2/3 of the groups X are derived from stearin and 1/3 from benzoic acid, and (ii) 50% wt. isopropyl oleate and 50% wt. of a material of formula (I) wherein all the groups X are derived from olein, are added to SAE 30 mineral oil of (a) 140 secs. Redwood I/140 DEG F. and V.I.65 and (b) 160 secs. Redwood I/140 DEG F. and V.I.95 respectively. In the first case 1/2 % of 8-hydroxyquinoline was added to prevent grease formation and the resulting lubricant composition was compared with (a) a mixture of calcium C16-C18 fatty acid soap and calcium carbonate in the same base oil and (b) a water-in-oil emulsion containing calcium acetate in the aqueous phase.
