Apparatus for de-watering sludge or the like, or for filtering waste waters, employing drain or filter pipes embedded in loose filter material, is characterized in that fine pore sheet material is provided at or near the inlet surface of the drain or filter pipe. In Fig. 1 a porous concrete pipe 12 is embedded in loose filter material 13 which fills a cavity 11 under the edge of a street 15a, 17. The pipe 12 is surrounded by a felt, nylon or like covering 18 which may be replaceable or be secured to the pipe. In Fig. 2, (not shown), the covering surrounds the pipe at a distance, the pipe being arranged in a road embankment, sports-ground or the like. In Fig. 3 (part of a town settling plant), sludge 19 being filtered rests upon loose material, e.g. uniform-grain gravel 13, within which is arranged sheet material 18c above a filter pipe 12 located in a cavity 11a. The sheet material may be laid upon the loose material ; the sheet material may be interposed between the loose material and the solid ground. The drain pipe may have a uniform grain structure of, e.g. basalt chip or gravel bound together by cement, artificial resin or the like. The pipe may have a mixed grain structure or it may have a layered structure. It may be made of a non- cementitious building material and be apertured or be laid with butt joints. The drain pipes need not be porous and may be vertical or inclined instead of horizontal. The loose material may be uniform and of single or mixed grain, e.g. sand or gravel ; it may extend below the drain pipe.
