Abstract
853,007. Road signals for controlling traffic. FOREST CITY ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and QUILLIAM, B. June 1, 1959 [June 3, 1958], No. 17617/58. Class 118 (2). A traffic signal has a constantly rotating electric motor actuating a cam-shaft whose cams operate four switches which control the traffic lights and also the speed of the motor and cam-shaft, the speed regulating the period of time during which a respective traffic light is illuminated. In a portable traffic signal, a motor M drives a cam-shaft which operates four micro-switches X, Y, C, D, the cams being so cut that the switches remain in their operated condition for one quarter of a revolution of the cam-shaft. With the switches as shown (all unoperated) the signals at both ends of a road show red R A , R B , and the speed of rotation of the motor is controlled by resistor R 1 . During the next quadrant of rotation (interval 1) switches X, C are operated, giving a green signal at one end G A , and controlling the motor speed by resistor R 2 . For the third quadrant all switches are again unoperated, and for the fourth switches X, Y, D are operated giving a green signal G B at the other end, and connecting resistor R 4 in the motor circuit. Vehicleoperated switches P A , P B at either end of the road are also included in the circuit to operate relays E, F. If light G A is illuminated, traffic passing over pad P A will cause relay E to operate to change-over contacts e, substituting resistor R 3 for resistor R 2 , to decrease the speed of the motor, allowing a longer period of " green " during periods of high traffic density in one direction. Relay F and resistor R 5 similarly extend the period of " green " for traffic moving in the opposite direction. The pads may comprise flexible tubes closed at one end, and having diaphragms at the other end which operate switch contacts.
