Abstract

852,686. Drawing apparatus. DARGUE BROS. Ltd. Aug. 8, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957; April 18, 1958], Nos. 33006/57 and 12295/58. Class 97(3) [Also in Group XV] A drawing board supporting frame is constructed from members which are made of materials not liable to warping, the frame being so arranged that it will not bend appreciably when carrying a drawing board, and being provided with end members having toothed racks for a rack and pinion straight edge parallel motion. As shown in Fig. 1 a wooden board 10 is mounted on a frame 11 consisting of two end members 12, 13 between which is arranged a lattice work of extruded members 14-17. The board 10 rests on the members 16, 17 and on machined surfaces 20 of end members 12, 13. Fixing screws 2@a are provided. Each end member receives pulleys 22 and 29 and has a rod 23 on which a counterbalance weight 26 for a straight-edge slides. The weight is attached to wires 27 and 28 which pass over the pulleys 22 and 29. Also fixed to each end member is a rack 24 having helical gear teeth. The straight-edge 32 (Figs. 2 and 3) has a tubular portion 33 and a bearing strip 34 which extends beyond the edge of the board and is provided with rubber caps 44. The strip 34 is connected to the body of the straight-edge by a portion 39a of stepped cross section and a strip of transparent material 35 is fixed to the underside of the straight-edge. A shaft 38 extends through the tubular portion 33 and is provided at its ends with helical gear pinions 36 which mesh with the racks 24. Retaining plates 40 having blocks 39 which engage with the rear of the racks 24 are also provided on the shaft 38. Nylon plugs 50 are provided in holes at the ends of the portions 3@a, which are adjustable by screws 54. The ends of the plugs bearing on the end members 12, 13 are either convex or may be bifurcated and provided with rollers. Movement of the plugs 50 causes the straightedge to be moved towards or away from the surface of the board. In an alternative construction the machined portions 20 of the end members 12, 13 are omitted and replaced by extruded metal sections fixed to the members. In a further arrangement (Figs. 6 and 7) the cast end members are replaced by extruded members 92 and 94. Rack teeth are provided in a portion 102 of the member 92 and the rod 23 is dispensed with, the weight 26 being suspended bv a plate 108 from two pairs of rollers 110 which run on tracks 112 formed on the member 92.
