Abstract

The invention comprises 1-b -isothiocyanoethyl-2-imidazolidinethione, and its preparation by reacting a soluble salt of b -[1-(2-thionoimidazolidyl)]ethyldithiocarbamic acid (e.g. the Na or K salt) with an ester of chloroformic acid at a temperature below about 35 DEG C., and decomposing the resulting alkoxycarbonyl-b -[1-(2-thionoimidazolidyl)]ethyl dithiocarbamate either by heating or on standing in the presence of a liquid. The decomposition may be effected by heating in the presence of water or an inert organic solvent to 50-125 DEG C. until the evolution of gas ceases, or by standing at 20-50 DEG C. in the presence of water, an organic solvent, or a mixture thereof, until the evolution of gas ceases. Specified chloroformic esters are those of C1-4 alkanols, hydroxyethanol, methoxyethanol, and chloroethanol. The compound of the invention reacts with aniline and dimethylamine to yield the corresponding thioureas. The preparation of the corresponding imidazolidinone by a method similar to the above is also described.ALSO:Fungicidal compositions comprise 1-b -isothiocyanoethyl-2-imidazolidinethione with an inert carrier. The compound may be dissolved in acetone and the solution diluted with water to give a suspension, or it may be used as an emulsifiable concentrate, e.g. 5 parts of compound, 90 parts of an aromatic naphtha or xylene, and 5 parts of an emulsifying composition, such as 2 parts of the water-soluble condensate of ethylene oxide and methylene bis-(diamylphenol), and 3 parts of calcium dodecyl-benzene sulphonate. A wettable powder may be prepared by mixing 25 parts of compound, 70 parts of fire clay or mixtures of other finely-divided inert solids, 2 parts of a lignin sulphonate and 3 parts of a just dry preparation of octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol. This powder is suspended in water and sprayed, or may be diluted with finely divided inert solids to give dusts containing 1-10% of active agent. Alternatively, dusts may be prepared from the compound and inert solids. Other agents may be incorporated in those compositions, e.g. other fungicides, a miticide, or an insecticide. Control has been achieved against bean rust and late blight on tomato. The corresponding oxygen analogue, 1-b -thiocyanoethyl-2-imidazolidinone, shows fungitoxicity.
