Abstract

852,503. Telescopic suspension units; helical springs. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 30, 1956 [Nov. 11, 1955], No. 32274/55. Class 108(3). A vehicle suspension unit comprises a telescopic damper 1 enclosed in a helical coil spring 3 one of the spring abutments taking the form of a movable member 10 which engages between the turns of the spring 3 and is adjustable to alter the effective length of the spring. As shown, the damper 1 is hydraulic, and its cylinder 1 has welded or brazed to it a helix 9 of square section - bar. The member 10 comprises a helical member which can be screwed along the helix 9, the pitch of which is equal to the pitch of the spring 3 in its fully extended condition. The member 10 has diametrically opposed lugs 11 which engage slots 12 formed in one of the two dust covers 13 and 14 of the unit. Thus. by rotating the dust cover 13 relative to the cylinder 1, the position of the member 10 is adjusted relative to the spring 3. The member 10 is located in position by means of a projection 16 which engages one of a corresponding series of notches 17 formed in the member 9. In an alternative form of the member 9 (Fig. 6, not shown), the helix is wound from rectangular cross-section bar which has a flange which projects radially outwards in the wound condition. This flange is turned upwardly at intervals to form projections which engage diametrically opposed recesses formed in the member 10 instead of the projections 16. The pitch of the helix 9 may be greater than that of the spring 3. This enables the pre-load of the unit to be varied, as well as the rate. Specification 745,843 is referred to.
