Abstract
852,362. Artificial legs. MAUCH, H. A. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 26, 1956], No. 34521/57. Class 81(2) An artificial leg comprises a shank 2 pivoted to a foot 1 for limited relative movement thereto and control means acting to limit dasiflexion of the foot relative to the shank under load whenever the longitudinal axis of the shank is in or has passed through a vertical position. The shank is pivoted to the foot about a pin 18 which carries steel brake discs 20 mounted at each end of a spacer bushing 21 and a rotatable bushing 25. The rotatable bushing supports a steel lever 26, one end of which is pivotally connected to an adjustable bracket 24 in the shank, the other end depending into a sector-shaped housing 12 which is carried by the pin and fixed in a recess 6 in the foot. The brake discs 20 project into the housing and the ends of the pin pass through holes 17 which are of larger diameter than the pin and are located in the top of the housing. Rollers 30, 31 seated on the rotatable bushing 25 are fixed to the shank 2 and project into the housing above steel balls 36 which can roll freely on the concave base 13 of the housing when the foot is not loaded. The lower end 29 of the lever tapers from front to rear and depends centrally between the balls 36. Springs 39, 40 between the foot 1 and the shank 2 bias the foot at right angles to the shank under no-load conditions. When the foot is loaded during a stride, the pin moves downwardly in the holes and the brake discs engage the housing to brake movement of the foot relative to the shank. As the shank and lever assume a vertical position under load, the lower end of the lever pivots between the balls and wedges them against the brake discs, which bear against the sides 15 and base of the housing, dasiflexion of the foot thus being limited. On releasing the load, the foot is free to pivot under gravity as limited by the springs 39 and 40. In a hydraulic form of the leg (Figs. 3 and 4 not shown), the lever is formed with a piston at the lower end which under no-load conditions is free to pivot in a sealed housing containing hydraulic fluid. On applying load, the piston bears against the bottom of the housing which restricts its movement relative to the housing. When the shank and the lever are vertical a ball which is normally free to roll on the bottom of the housing, closes an aperture through the piston thus preventing flow of fluid from one side of the piston to the other and locking the foot relative to the shank.
