Abstract
Solutions of homo- or co-polymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid with alcohols containing at least 4 carbon atoms are prepared by a process which comprises initially polymerizing the ester in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and controlling the temperature of the reaction by the addition of lubricating oil so that the reaction temperature is maintained substantially constant. Polymers specified are homopolymers of 3 : 5 : 5-trimethylhexyl, n-dodecyl and n-hexadecyl methacrylates, copolymers of two or more of the above methacrylates, n-octadecyl and/or n-butyl methacrylate, polymers of dodecyl acrylate and copolymers of dodecyl methacrylate and beta (N N1 diethyl) aminoethyl methacrylate. The lubricating oil used may be of the mineral or synthetic type. As a polymerization catalyst there is specified benzoyl peroxide. The initial polymerization may be carried out either in bulk or in solution.ALSO:Products suitable for use in lubricants as viscosity index improvers and pour point depressants are obtained by the polymerization of acrylic and methacrylic esters of alcohols containing at least four carbon atoms in the presence of lubricating oil (see Group IV(a)). In the examples the following products having viscosity index improving properties are described: (2) a copolymer of n-butyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl methacrylates; (3) and (4) mineral oil solutions of poly-3:5:5-trimethylhexyl methacrylate; and (5) a mineral oil solution of a copolymer of 3:5:5-trimethylhexyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl methacrylates. Copolymers of dodecyl methacrylate and beta (N,N1-diethyl) aminoethyl methacrylate are also mentioned. In place of the mineral oil there may be used a synthetic lubricant, e.g. a dicarboxylic acid diester.
