A mowing machine which comprises a frame 11 mounted on tractor hitch-links 20, 37, 38 and has a cutter-bar 24 carried by inner and outer shoes is characterised in that one of the hitch-links 37 is universally-jointed to a lever 13 pivotally attached to the frame 11 at its rear end and a spring 16 is mounted between the lever 13 and the frame so that the reaction of the spring on the frame, when the mower is in its working position, causes a transfer of weight from the inner mower-shoe 33 to a wheel or skid 34 arranged on the side of the frame remote from the cutter-bar. The hitch-link 38 is jointed to a fixed bracket 12 on the frame and the upper link 20 is attached to a pivoted arm 17 on the frame, the opposite end of which can be adjusted by a turn buckle 21to tilt the mower about a transverse axis. The rest-positions of the lower hitch-links are also adjustable by turnbuckles 35, 36. The lever 13 is pivoted about a horizontal pin 14 and has a pendant tongue 15 abutting the spring. The tongue is attached by a link 45 to a lever 40 swingable about a pin 41 against the action of a spring 44, the lever being connected by a cable 42 to an arm 43 on the inner end of the cutter-bar assembly whereby the load carried by the outer mower-shoe (not shown), is also decreased. The cutter-bar assembly can break-back about a pivot 30, under excess loading, by the yielding of a strut 31 having an overload-release device 32. When the mower is lifted, the lever 13 swings upwardly until prevented by contact between the main frame and an upstanding abutment (not shown). The drive to the cutters is taken from the tractor via a jointed shaft 25, chaindrive 26, cone-clutch 27 and gearbox 28, the cone-clutch permitting interruption of the drive upon break-back.
