Abstract
Metallic gold and silver present in ores are extracted in an aqueous solution comprising an alkyl or aralkyl a -hydroxy nitrile with which the metals form complexes. Specified nitriles are lactonitrile, a -hydroxy-iso-butyronitrile, glycolonitrile and mandelonitrile. An inorganic cyanide may also be present in the extracting solution.ALSO:Silver and gold are extracted from ores by grinding the ore, forming a pulp thereof with an aqueous solution comprising an alkyl or aralkyl a -hydroxynitrile and digesting the pulp to form a solution from which the metal can be recovered. Specified nitriles are lactonitrile, a -hydroxy-iso-butyronitrile, glycolonitrile and mandelonitrile. If desired an inorganic cyanide may also be present in the solution used for digestion. The pH of the pulp may be adjusted by means of lime, e.g. to about 11 or may be allowed to remain at about 6.
