A control device is positioned in a tubing string by a retrievable hanger which is landed and latched in a nipple 1 having a landing shoulder 2 and an annular notch 4 for receiving latching dogs 14. The hanger comprises telescoping members 5, 6, the latter having windows for the dogs 14 and the former having a relieved surface 15 which allows the dogs to retract when the device is being run in. The member 6 is connected to a member 9 which is clutched temporarily to the member 5 by dogs 4 engaging a groove therein, the dogs being kept in the groove by a ring 25 connected to the member 9 by tangential shear pins 28. The device is run in by a hollow cupped member 31 suspended from a jar head 32 from a wire line 33 and attached to the member 9 by shear pins 34. When the ring 25 lands on the shoulder 2, the dogs 15 are aligned with the notch 4. A downward jar shears the pins 28 and allows the member 9 to descend until the ring 25 abuts against the shoulder 27, the dogs 24 being thus released from the member 5, but prevented from complete dislodgment by the skirt on the ring 25. The sleeves 5 is now free to descend still further, to cam the dogs 14 positively into the notch 4, and is held in this position by aluminium or like soft metal ratchettoothed arcuate members 11 which are pressed inwardly by coil spring 12 to engage a ratchettoothed formation on the member 5. An upward jar on the line 33 now shears the pins 34 and the running in gear is removed. When the device is to be retrieved, a fishing tool grasps the neck 19 and collar 20, an upward jar on the member 5 strips the ratchet teeth on the members 11, the dogs 14 are aligned with the relief 15 and the device is free to leave the well.
