Abstract
850,821. Nuclear fission reactors. SPITZER, L. Feb. 4, 1957, No. 3846/57. Class 39(4). Apparatus for raising a gas to high temperature, comprises a continuous magnetically permeable tube, a magnetic system for producing within the tube a unidirectional magnetic field parallel to the axis of the tube substantially throughout its length, and means for introducing atoms within the tube. The tube may be in the form of a figure of eight, the end hooks of which need not be coplanar but should preferably be in parallel planes, and is surrounded by a cooling jacket containing heavy water or lithium to slow down and absorb emitted neutrons. The tube is surrounded by a coil producing a unidirectional magnetic field, and may be surrounded by a further coil producing an alternating magnetic field, the coils being cooled by water, liquid air, or liquid hydrogen. As shown in Fig. 4 the tube 10 may be interrupted by an iron yoke 26 through which extend conical tubes 28 surrounded by coils 30 which divert part of the magnetic field through them. Thus charged particles approaching the walls of tube 10 are diverted into tubes 28 and strike the end caps 32 of these tubes when they are neutralised and pumped off through tubes 35. Fresh fuel can be introduced into tube 10 through radial tubes (not shown) provided with jet orifices so that the fuel is injected with a high radial velocity.
