Abstract

850,716. Venoclysis apparatus. BECTON, DICKINSON & CO. Aug. 8, 1958 [Aug. 12, 1957], No. 25544/58. Class 81(2) A venoclysis receptacle comprises an accordionpleated side wall of soft, pliable resilient material between two ends, and a graduated scale detachably fixed to one end and extending towards the other end to indicate the capacity of the receptacle by the position along the scale of a part of the receptacle adjacent the other end. The receptacle for receiving storing and administering parenteral liquids e.g. blood is made of polyethylene or vinyl resin and has an accordion pleated side wall 16. A stopper 20, having one or more pairs of upper and lower recesses 21 defining self-sealing diaphragms which may be pierced by a cannula 22 for emptying or filling the receptacle is disposed in an opening in the top 17. Alternatively the top 17 may have thickened pierceable areas (not shown) which are provided with a detachable cover. A capacity index card 37 is supported by a bracket 35 disposed around the lower part of the receptacle or by an extension of the base 15 of the receptacle. For dispensing liquid, the receptacle is inverted and suspended from a hook by either a tab 39 formed in the base 15 or a bracket 41 surrounding the receptacle near the base 15. The base 15 is pierced by a venting needle 45 so that liquid can flow from the receptacle through the needle 22 passed through the stopper 20. Alternatively, for filling and emptying the receptacle may be placed in a rack comprising a base 46 with legs and upstanding guide rods 48 one of which carries indicia. The venting needle need not be used, the receptacle collapsing as it empties, assisted if desired by a weight placed on the base 15 or the top 17. The top 17 may have apertured tabs for receiving specimen tubes. When not containing a parenteral solution, the receptacle is collapsed and may be stored with others in a metal container 24 which may be filled with inert gas, each collapsed receptacle being separated from the others by separators 26 and partly or wholly filled with saline or anti-coagulant solution.
