Abstract
850,636. Making tubes; tube expanders; broaching. ALBERTA PHOENIX TUBE & PIPE Ltd. Aug. 1, 1958 [May 8, 1958], No. 24873/58. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4). A continuous process for the production and expansion of a metal pipe comprises the steps of forming said pipe, continuously feeding said pipe on to an expander-bullet-assembly rigidly maintained and axially mounted within the formed pipe, and passing said pipe over an expander head of said assembly so as to expand the perimeter of said pipe. Steel strip from an uncoiler is formed up into a tube 11 by rolls 12, and is welded along its longitudinal seam by resistance welding means 13. The tube 11 then passes under a trim-tool T to remove outsideupset caused by the weld, and over an inside nicking-tool 18 and cutting-tool 19 which together break up and remove inside weld trim, the larger pieces of trim being held back by weighted wipers 20 hinged to a fixed mandrelrod 14 extending through the tube 11. Alternatively felt or rubber discs may be secured around the outer periphery of a member 25 secured to the rod 14. Fine-trim particles are flushed out by fluid introduced into the tube 11 and sucked out by a pump 29. The tube 11, after cooling in the section C, is expanded by passage over an expander 26 attached to the end of the rod 14, and is then reduced in circumference by rolls S. The expander 26 is formed with a longitudinal groove 17 to accommodate the weld-bead on the tube 11, and has a lubricating passageway extending from a passageway 28 in the rod 14 to a peripheral lubricating- groove 30. The tube may be cut to lengths after passing through the rolls S. Extruded seamless tubes may be pushed by rolls over the expander.
