Abstract
850,409. Gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N. V., DE. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957], No. 5555/58. Class 55 (2). In a process for preparing a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partial combustion under superatmospheric pressure of a gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon with oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen and wherein the oxygen or gas containing free oxygen is supplied to a reaction chamber from a whirl chamber through an opening at one end of the reaction chamber, the two chambers having a common longitudinal axis, the oxygen or gas containing free oxygen is introduced into the whirl chamber through a plurality of slots whose direction, in the cross-section of the whirl chamber, is normal or inclined to the radius through their point of entry and the rate of gas flow through the slots is such that any pressure difference occurring in the space surrounding the slots is small compared with the pressure drop across them. Steam may be added to the oxygen or gas containing free oxygen. The apparatus shown comprises a reaction chamber 4 opening into a larger chamber 16, a tube 3 for introducing a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon into the reaction chamber 4 and a whirl chamber 8 supplied with oxygen or gas containing free oxygen and any steam necessary from a pipe 9 and a chamber 10 through inclined slots 7 formed in the outer wall of the whirl chamber. The slots 7 aie arranged so that the gas flowing through them enters the whirl chamber in a direction tangential to an imaginary cylinder having a diameter which is less than two thirds of the largest diameter of the whirl chamber. The oxygen or gas containing free oxygen and steam if present is or are introduced tangentially into the chamber 10 to rotate therein in the same sense as the gas in the whirl chamber. The throat 5 of the whirl chamber is cooled by circulating a cooling fluid through a channel 15 in the outer wall of the chamber and the chamber 4 is surrounded by a cooling jacket.
