Abstract
A soft, non-friable, non-flowing but selfhealing gel may be made by reacting, in a liquid phase, (1) an organosiloxane having a viscosity of from 100 to 10,000 cs. at 25 DEG C. and being a p copolymer consisting essentially of R.ViSiO, R2SiO and CH3R2SiO0.5 units wherein each R is a methyl or phenyl radical and Vi is a vinyl radical, at least 0.174 molar per cent. of the units in the copolymer being R.ViSiO units, with (2) a liquid siloxane of the average general formula H.R.CH3.SiO(R2SiO)nSiCH3RH, wherein n has an average value of from 0 to 800 and each R is a methyl or phenyl radical, the viscosity of the siloxane being not more than 10,000 cs. at 25 DEG C. and not more than 25 molar per cent. of the total R radicals present in (1) and (2) being phenyl, in the presence of (3) a platinum catalyst in amount sufficient to furnish at least 0.1 part per million of Pt calculated on the sum of the weights of (1) and (2), the proportions of (1) and (2) being such that prior to the reaction there is an average of from 1.4 to 1.8 of the Si-bonded H atoms in (2) per molecule of (1) and there being at least one RViSiO unit in (1) for every Si-bonded H atom in (2), the molecular weight of (1) being calculated by the equation: log. visc. = 1,00 + 0,0123M,0,5 where M is the molecular weight and "visc." is the viscosity in cs. at 25 DEG C. of (1). Preferably siloxanes (1) and (2) should be free from Si-bonded OH groups. Catalysts specified are platinum per se or as deposited on silica gel or charcoal; platinic chloride and sulphate; potassium and sodium platinic chlorides; and chloro-platinic acid, preferably as the hexahydrate. The catalyst may be dissolved in a solvent, e.g. dimethyl carbitol or phthalate. Reaction between (1) and (2) can take place at room or preferably at elevated (e.g. 125 DEG to 165 DEG C.) temperature. For shipping and storage purposes, the chloroplatinic acid is mixed with copolymer (1) and this mixture is then diluted with the required amount of (2) just prior to using. Examples are given. Uses : for potting, filling or encapsulating electrical apparatus.
