Abstract

849,488. Electric digital - data - storage apparatus. FERRANTI Ltd. Dec. 7, 1957, No. 38111/57. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XX] A digital data store comprises a rotatable flexible disc mounted on a driving shaft in a chamber having opposed plane surfaces in close parallel spaced relationship with the disk, means for recording information on and/or reading information from a plane storage surface of the disc, inlets in the walls of the chamber adjacent the shaft and outlets adjacent the periphery of the disc for air or other gas, the arrangement being such that at high speeds of rotation the disc assumes a position exactly midway between the opposed surfaces. As shown, a magnetic store for a digital computer comprises a disc 20, e.g. of paper or plastic film, axially slidable on a square motor-driven shaft 11 in a chamber 19 formed between plates 13, 14. Air may enter through circular apertures 24 in the plates to be expelled via the peripheral gaps 25. Magnetic reading and/or recording heads 22 are embedded in plastic in the plate 13. As the shaft is rotated at high speed the disc assumes a position exactly midway between the two surfaces 13, 14. In another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) information is recorded on one side of the disc which is sufficiently thin to enable the information to be read out from the other side. In another embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the storage surface is photosensitive (see Group XX).
