849,328. Steering vehicles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 16, 1959, No. 20593/59. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A road vehicle steering system has a pickup which produces a signal responsive to the . input steering torque and another which produces a signal responsive to the output steering force and a hydraulic servo system which operates in response to the algebraic sum of the pick-up signals. The steering system (conventional) comprises a steering wheel 22, steering shaft 20, steering gear 24, and pitman arm 26 connected to the wheels 16 and 18 through drag links and tie rods. The pitman arm is connected to the piston of a hydraulic power cylinder 50 operated by a pump 44 in response to a valve 46. A strain gauge bridge 58 is connected to the steering shaft such that strain in the shaft produces a potential difference across the points 60 of polarity and magnitude determined by the applied torque. The signal is applied to an amplifier 62, the output of which is applied to an amplifier 66 and the output of amplifier 66 is applied to a servo amplifier 68 whose output is applied to the valve 46. A second strain gauge bridge 69 is arranged on pitman arm 26 and in response to the output steering force feeds back a signal into a second input of amplifier 66 through an amplifier 72. The amplifier 66 combines the signals from the strain gauge bridges according to the algebraic sums of the signals.
