Abstract
Solvent used in the polymerisation of monoolefins and diolefins having an olefinic linkage in the 1-position and which has been separated and recovered from the polymerisation reactor effluent is distilled, the polymer in solution recovered as a bottom product passed to a flash zone, whence the vaporised solvent is returned to the distillation, the polymer recovered from the flash zone, and solvent free from polymer recovered as an overhead product from the distillation. In a preferred process a portion of the overhead distillation fraction is cooled, condensed, free water removed, part returned as reflux to the distillation, another portion of the condensate, degassed and dehydrated, a portion of the overhead vapours from this step also cooled, condensed, free water removed and returned as reflux to the degassing and dehydrating step, and pure solvent recovered as a bottom product of the degassing and dehydration step. It is preferred that the olefin is a 1-olefin, e.g. ethylene or butadiene, prepared in the presence of an activated chromium oxide-silica-alumina catalyst in solution in a saturated hydrocarbon solvent.
