Abstract
849,179. Heaters for motor vehicles. STEWART-WARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1959, No. 1435/59. Classes 75(1) and 126. [Also in Group XIII] A burner adapted to be removably coupled to a tubular fitting 44 attached to a heat exchanger in an air duct 10 comprises a tubular air supply casing 70, a tubular combustion chamber 50 attached to a plate 52 fixed across an opening in the air casing 70, a fuel nozzle 62 having its forward end seated in an opening in the plate 52 and a plurality of openings 64 in the plate 52 outwardly of the combustion chamber 50, whereby the insertion of the combustion chamber 50 within the tubular fitting 44 forms an annular chamber 68 into which air flows through the openings 64 and out of which air flows through holes 58 to the combustion chamber. Air holes are also provided in the plate 52 inwardly of the opening 64 so that air can pass directly from the air casing 70 into the combustion chamber. Louvres are provided to cause the air to swirl. The inner end 56 of the combustion chamber fits slidingly into one end of the tubular fitting 44. The other end of the tubular fitting is clamped by a screw tightened band 76 to a flange on the air casing 70. The nozzle 62 is secured in a hollow stem formed in the air casing 70 and containing a fuel valve actuated by an electromagnet 86 secured to the base of the air casing. Fuel is delivered by a fitting 90. Air is delivered from a blower to the air casing 70 through one or other of two tubular radial horns (not shown) cast integrally with the air casing 70 and connected to rubber tubes extending through and fitting tightly into apertures in the air duct 10. The rubber tubes form a resilient support for the burner. The horn not connected to the blower is closed by a disc having a small hole which prevents noisy or uneven operation of the burner. An ignition electrode 78 extends through the air casing 70. and through an aperture in the plate 52. The heat exchanger comprises three spaced cylindrical sheet metal shells 24, 26, 28. One end of the inner shell 28 is closed by the tubular fitting 44 and the other end is closed by a disc 40. The ends of the two outer shells 24, 26 are connected together to form between the shells an annular chamber which is connected to the inner shell 28 by an elongated passage 33 and which is provided with an outlet tube 30 for exhaust gases. The air in the duct 10 passes over the outermost shell 24 and between the other two shells 26, 28. A part 14 of the duct 10 is removable ; a thermostatic switch 20 for closing the fuel valve in the event of overheating is mounted in the removable part 14. Unburned fuel is conveyed by a pipe 112 from the burner to the exhaust tube 30.
