Abstract

Solid olefin polymer, e.g. polyethylene, is separated from a suspension thereof in solvent vapour by contacting this vapour suspension removed from a zone of sub-atmospheric pressure with cold liquid solvents, passing the resulting slurry of the polymer to a liquid-solids separating zone and recovering a polymer-free solvent vapour from the contacting step. The polymerisation is preferably carried out at low pressure using chromium oxide catalyst. The concentrated slurry from the separation zone may be returned to the zone of sub-atmospheric pressure while the cold liquid solvent may be applied as a spray. The cold liquid solvent, which may be the same as the solvent vapour, may be on the surface of a body contained in a second zone of reduced pressure, the polymercontaining vapour being sprayed thereon, a spray of additional cold solvent being introduced to this zone above the surface a stream of polymercontaining liquid solvent being withdrawn from the zone and filtered.
