Abstract
The invention comprises 2-furoyl dialkyl-dithiocarbamates in which each alkyl contains not more than four carbon atoms and di-(2-furoyl) ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate, and the preparation thereof by reacting, in a solvent medium, 2-furoyl bromide or chloride and a salt of a dialkyldithiocarbamic acid or of ethylene-bis-dithio carbamic acid. Sodium or potassium salts are preferred, and the reaction is carried out between -5 DEG and 20 DEG C. It is further disclosed that 2-furoyl chloride and sodium piperidine carbodithioate react to give N-furoyl piperidine.ALSO:Fungicidal compositions comprise a major proportion by weight of an inert diluent and, as active ingredient, a minor proportion by weight of a 2-furoyl dialkyldithio carbamate in which each alkyl group contains not more than four carbon atoms or di-(2-furoyl) ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate. Compositions may comprise dusts, sprays, wettable powders or concentrates for dilution with water, containing if desired, other fungicides, insecticides, miticides and comparable pesticides. The dust compositions may further contain dispersing and/or sticking agents, a typical dust composition being 5 parts 2-furoyl dimethyldithio carbamate, 1 part condensed naphthalene-formaldehyde sodium sulphonate, 80 parts kaolin, and 14 parts diatomaceous earth. Other inert diluents include talc, pyrophillite and silica. An example of a wettable powder is 25 parts di-(2-furoyl) ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate, 70 parts finely particled Georgia clay, 2 parts lignin sulphonate and 3 parts of an octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol wetting agent, and an example of an emulsion concentrate is 20 parts 2-furoyl-dimethyldithiocarbamate, 75 parts xylene, 1 part calcium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and 4 parts tert-octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol. The compound of the invention may also be mixed with discrete quantities of soil for use as a fungus resisting growth medium.
