Abstract
848,771. Soot-blowers. WILSON, P. M. April 9, 1959 [April 10, 1958], No. 11336/58. Class 99(2). A pneumatic remote control system for a battery of soot-blowers comprises for the control of each soot-blower a valve assembly including a main piston valve 14 which can be pre-set under manual control, a primary valve 11 and a secondary valve 12 both operated by the sootblower, and a motor control valve 13. When the soot-blower is at rest the valve 11 remains closed and the valve 12 is held open. Presetting of the valve 14 causes the blower-driving air motor 10 to be started whereupon the valve 12 is closed and the valve 11 is opened temporarily so as to pass compressed air to the valve 14 which is thereby returned to its initial position and passes air to the closed valve 12. At the end of its cycle of operations the soot-blower opens the valve 12 which passes air to the valve 13 to stop the motor 10 and supplies air to the main piston 14A of the next soot-blower. As shown in Fig. 1, the battery consists of two soot-blowers compressed air being supplied to the motors 10, 10A through pipes 7, 7A and to the control system through pipes 8, 8A, 9. A starter hand valve 16 when held open passes air from the pipe 9 via a filter 18, lubricator 19 and pipe 17 to the valve 14 to pre-set the latter and to a time-lag device 20, 21, 22 which controls the opening of a piston valve 23 for the passage of air there-through from the pipe 17 to the preset valve 14 whence the air passes to the valve 13 which is displaced and supplies air from the pipe 7 to the motor 10. When the second soot-blower stops air from the valve 12A is passed back through piping 33 to the valve 23 which is thus returned to its initial position, a time-lag device being incorporated to the piping 33 to allow the valve 13A to reach its motorstopping position before the valve 23 is returned to its initial position. Knobs 15, 15A associated with the valves 14, 14A indicate, when projected therefrom, that the soot-blowers are in operation. Each soot-blower is provided with an auxiliary manually-operated valve 40 and an associated shuttle valve 41 which, in case a soot-blower fails to operate, allows the latter to be isolated without affecting the operation of the other soot-blowers. The control system may also be hydraulically operated. The valves 11, 12, Figs. 2 and 4, are operated by cam humps 51, 53 mounted on discs 50, 52 provided on a shaft 54 rotatable step-by-step by a non-rotatable nut 71 which reciprocates along a reversible rotary screw 72 in unison with the cleaning fluid ejector forming part of the soot-blower and connected to a shaft 73 which is driven through gearing and clutch mechanism by a shaft 62 rotated by the motor 10. Specification 771,614 is referred to.
