Abstract

848,446. Electrostatic precipitation. LUEDER, H. Sept. 6, 1956 [Sept. 6, 1955], No. 27370/56. Class 39(1). An electrostatic precipitator comprises a substantially smooth precipitator electrode 2 and a discharge electrode 1 having a plurality of points 5 directed towards and all at substantially the same distance from the electrode 2, the points 5 providing a corona discharge and each being provided with an individual high resistance in series with it which limits the current intensity of the ion stream flowing away from the point. The points 5 are on rod-like bodies 4 and in the construction shown in Fig. 2, the inner ends of the bodies 4 are embedded in a non-porous plastics layer 6, the portion of the layer in the immediate vicinity of the end of each body serving as a series resistance for the corresponding point 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the bodies 4 are made of a non-porous plastics material, e.g. a plastic such as polyvinyl chloride, to serve as the series resistances, and are secured in direct contact with the electrode 1 by an insulating or poorly conducting adhesive layer 7. The electrodes 1 and 2 can be of planar, cylindrical, conical or other form. The spacing between the electrodes 1 and 2 need not be constant over their whole length, e.g. the part of the electrode 1 provided with points 5 could be spaced at a greater distance from the electrode 2 than in the adjoining smooth part of the electrode 1. The electrode 1 can be made by covering a plate with an adhesive layer, and establishing a strong electrostatic field over it to attract non-porous plastics filaments, all of the same length, from a pan, the filaments aligning themselves perpendicularly to the plate. The bodies 4 can be arranged in rows which extend across the electrode 1 substantially transversely to the direction of flow of the gas, the sum of the cross-sectional areas of all the bodies 4 can be less than one tenth of the whole electrode area provided with the bodies, and the spacing between the points of the bodies can be not greater than the length of the bodies to provide strong flow resistance to the gas. The spacing between the points can be less than 1 mm. and the distance between the points and the precipitator electrode 2 can be greater than 1 mm.
